Surrounded by five Munros, and with the breath-taking scenery of Glencoe and Rannoch Moor, and the waters of the adjacent River Etive and nearby Loch Etive, Dalness is the ideal setting for the start of Highland Kings.

Bidean nam Bian is the highest peak in a group of mountains south of Glen Coe and north of Glen Etive. With a height of 1,150 metres, it is a Munro and the highest point in Argyll. It is a complex mountain, with many ridges and subsidiary peaks.

The infamy of the massacre of Glencoe is not so much in the numbers killed, but in the way it was carried out. Campbell of Glenlyon led a group of some 128 soldiers who stayed with the MacDonalds for some 12 days and then turned on their hosts in the early morning of 13th February, killing 38 of them whilst some tried to escape into the snowy hills. The infamy of the massacre is “murder under trust”, murder of those who had offered them hospitality.

Rising above vast forestry, Beinn Fhionnlaidh is a rugged and long mountain situated near the head of Loch Etive and stretching from Glen Creran westwards to Glen Etive.

A Munro is defined as a mountain in Scotland with a height over 3,000 feet (914.4 m), and which is on the Scottish Mountaineering Club (SMC) official list of Munros; there is no explicit topographical prominence requirement.

Stob Ghabhar is part of the Black Mount group. It is a Munro with a height of 1,090 metres lying nine kilometres northwest of Bridge of Orchy and stands on the border of the Argyll and Highland council areas.

The crossing of Rannoch Moor is one of the classic stages of the West Highland Way. In fine weather this is a place of otherworldly beauty - in a storm it is wild, forbidding and exposed. Underfoot conditions are easy and some may opt to continue to Kinlochleven.

Loch Linnhe is a sea loch on the west coast of Scotland. The part upstream of Corran is known in Gaelic as An Linne Dhubh, and downstream as An Linne Sheileach. The name Linnhe is derived from the Gaelic word linne, meaning "pool".

Barcaldine is a small settlement centred on the historic Barcaldine House and located on the banks of Loch Creran between Oban and Ballachulish. Barcaldine Castle is located a few kilometres to the west.

Colin Roy Campbell of Glenure (1708-1752), nicknamed "The Red Fox", was the government-appointed factor to the forfeited lands of the Clan Stewart of Appin in north Argyllshire. His murder has been described as the Highland mystery that has never been laid to rest, with disquiet surrounding the execution of the man convicted of the murder existing for more than 250 years.

The name Etive is believed to mean "little fierce one" from the Gaelic goddess associated with Loch Etive. At the north end of Glen Etive lie two mountains – Buachaille Etive Mòr and Buachaille Etive Beag – known as the "Herdsmen of Etive".
